Runners storm Silverstone
Back to overview
On Sunday 3rd March during the run up to the start of this year's Formula One Season, over sixty fantastic Wings for Life supporters successfully completed the Silverstone Half Marathon.
Following months of training, our runners took to the world famous motor racing circuit for a half marathon with a difference. Our runners ranged from those attempting their first ever half marathon right through to experienced regular competitors, and everyone did brilliantly. Tim Sherman and Jeremy Vick (Red Bull Racing) were our speediest runners, crossing the finish line at an amazing 01:19:35 and 01:20:54 respectively.
To keep our runners motivated and to give them as much support as possible we had their families and friends with us on the side-lines waving banners and cheering them on. One of our runners, James Latter said,
“All the way through Wings for Life have been so supportive which made a real difference. Gathering with the Wings for Life team including the other runners at the start really helped to steady the nerves. I am so pleased I took part, especially as I had never run until a few months ago, and I'll always have a great memory of lining up on the grid hearing the F1 theme tune. The day was incredible and my family had a great time. My daughter enjoyed hearing about the charity and she has been talking about it non-stop at school! Hopefully all of us have raised a lot of money for Wings for Life.”
With the added incentive of an exclusive tour around the Red Bull Racing factory if they hit their fundraising targets, runners, together with the Red Bull Racing team have already raised over £20,000. Sponsorship is being collected until the end of March and so this fantastic intermediary total is still growing every day.
Taking part in a half marathon is an amazing achievement and we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our wonderful runners. You all did so well taking on such a demanding challenge, realising your personal goals, fundraising, and helping us in finding a cure for spinal cord injury.
We have loved having you on the Wings for Life Team and we hope you will join us again.
