Spinal cord injury is an abrupt trauma that causes an immediate massive cell death due to the mechanical choc but triggers also a secondary damage (also due to a local induced toxicity) that further extends the injury. The neurons first need to survive in this environment and eventually later reconnect its target if he damage isolated them. This research project focus on a specific family of molecules that are helping the cell to survive after the injury but that also promote the regeneration of the neurons that were disconnected from their targets. This will be achieved by injecting these “survival and regrowth” signals using a genetically modified viral structure.
