Yesterday saw the Formula One World Champion race suits auctioned by London’s prestigious auction house, Bonhams. The race suits signed and worn by the six world champions on the 2012 circuit raised £39,000 with this year’s Championship winner Sebastian Vettel’s going for an incredible £11,000 pounds.
The race suits were donated by the drivers to raise money for the Wings for Life charity to fund cutting-edge research projects and clinical trials across the globe aimed at accelerating progress towards a cure for spinal cord injury.
The Formula One legends who donated their race suits were: Championship-winning Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Kimi Räikkönen. Each race suit was complimented by other donations from the six drivers including pairs of signed race gloves and signed photographic prints.
The live auction was part of Bonhams’ traditional end of year sale of Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia. Buyers bid online, by telephone and at the event in person.
Three times Formula One World Champion and Wings for Life ambassador Sebastian Vettel commented:
“It’s been one of the most competitive seasons for Formula One drivers. I’m really proud to have won the Championship with the team and it's great that these suits have raised so much money for such a fantastic charity.”
