632,520 stairs raises 10,000 euros
Hotel Victoria Nürnberg in Germany has been a family business for more than 100 years. CEO Sabine Powels is therefore no stranger to knowing how to deal with guests and how to turn an unavoidable issue into a virtue. In the last few months of the historic building’s renovation, the lift had to be put necessarily out of action. “With three floors and no lift, we coined the ‘Victoria Challenge’”, Sabine Powels explains. Every employee and guest took to the stairs inspired and motivated by signs about health and fitness.
As a token gesture, the guests furthermore donated one, two or three euros to Wings for Life– depending on the floor they were staying on.
83 tons of carried bags and 158 thousand calories burnt
This week the lift was brought into service again and the Victoria team handed over their donation of 10,000 euros (8,797 pounds) to Wolfgang Illek from Wings for Life. “Simply being able to use the stairs is impossible for people with a spinal cord injury. We are thankful that the Victoria Challenge has raised such awareness for this topic”, says Wolfgang Illek.
Sabine Powels added, “We are very happy that through the course of our renovation we have been able to highlight the issues around spinal cord injuries and the need for a cure. Our guests showed their understanding and support by using the stairs. Some of them even decided to donate for spinal cord research as well.” She also gave a huge shout out and thank you to her employees. “I am very proud that my team took to this challenge with daily motivation and dedication.”
In total, the guests and team handled 632,520 stairs, carried 2,774 bags, 29.1 tons of laundry, 120kg of minibar-items and burned 158,130 calories across 78 days. Now the lift is back in action! :-)
We want to take this opportunity to again thank Hotel Victoria Nurnberg’s staff and guests for this unique campaign and your great donation. As always we give 100% of the money into research projects to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
