Can reactivation of endogenous developmental gene expression and motor training facilitate functional regeneration after SCI

Funded in: 2010, 2011, 2012

Back to overview

In differentiated mature “adult” motoneurons genes which are important for axon regeneration are repressed and not more functional. Transient de-repression of the mature neuronal state of mature neurons using histone deacetyase (HDAC) inhibitors may aid the reactivation of endogenous developmental gene expression that will facilitate regeneration.
Combined with motor training HDAC inhibition will allow lesioned motor neurons to display an enhanced capacity for outgrowth.
