Trans Savoie 2015 6-day high alpine enduro race

Initiator : Ed Bartlett
Deadline: 2015-09-06

The story behind

From Sunday August 23rd I will be one of around 100 riders competing in the 2015 Trans Savoie mountainbike enduro race, raising money for the Wings for Life spinal research charity. Starting from Val D'Isere ski resort at an altitude of 2,800m, the race ends 6 days later in Chamonix Mont Blanc, via some of the highest, steepest, most technical and exposed natural trails the alps has to offer. Some of the statics of the event are mindblowing, even for those who regularly ride high alpine MTB:

> 6 consecutive days

> 7-9hrs (50km+) per day

> 27 timed stages

> 25,000m of technical descending

> 5,000m of off-road ascending

> Altitudes up to 3,000m

> Temps from -5 to 35ºC

A high proportion (50% or more) of the special stages are double-black-diamond-technicality or harder as defined by the IMBA, with the remainder being classified as at least single-black-diamond level. Adding to the sense of adventure, trails are ridden solo, and with no previous sighting.

More details can be found here: trans-savoie.com

We are all doubtless aware of the many worthy charitable causes needing support. As someone who regularly engages in sports with a very real possibility of spinal injury, it is impossible for me as an active able-bodied person with an unbridled passion for hurtling down mountains and around racetracks as an exposed sack of flesh and bone on two wheels to imagine what it means to lose my mobility. Think about it for just a second.

What's more you don't have to be a crazy thrill-seeker to be at risk of spinal injury - around 1,000 people are affected each year in the UK alone, primarily young adults who are then faced with a lifetime of challenges. Sporting injuries are in fact the smallest category, with 50% of injuries caused by road accidents and a startling 25% from falls. Imagine even a single day of total or partial paralysis, and how it would severely impact almost every aspect of not only your own life, but of those close to you.

The positive news is that scientists have now proven that injured nerve cells in the spinal cord are capable of regeneration, and there is a strong belief that paraplegia may one day soon become a thing of the past.

Unfortunately due to the comparatively low number of sufferers, it is an under-funded area of science. Unlike the many great charities that work to provide support and care for people affected by spinal injury, Wings for Life focuses entirely on supporting the search for a cure. What's more, 100% of the administrative costs of the charity are paid by Red Bull, meaning 100% of the money you donate will go directly into the field.

I will be posting updates throughout my trip on Instagram via @edbartlett starting from August 13th until 30th. Please do all you can to donate, support and share! And a little mindfulness task - spend the rest of today imagining how you would complete each task without full use of your limbs. It makes an event like the Trans Savoie feel like a walk in the park...
