A look back at 2012

Back to overview

Dear Wings for Life friends & supporters,

The holidays are almost here and the year of 2012 draws to a close. It’s a year we will always remember. It was our best year so far, both in terms of research and fundraising.

In regards to research, we have made many strides forward. One highlight was definitely the 1st European Neurotrauma School, organised in collaboration with the UK charity, International Spinal Research Trust (ISRT). During a week full of lectures, young researchers were totally engaged in looking for new solutions to spinal cord injury.

Another landmark was an Imaging workshop led by our Scientific Director Jan Schwab. The development of new imaging tools is an important requirement for successful clinical studies which are integral to our progress in spinal cord research.

In total, we funded 22 research projects across various fields of spinal cord research including stem cell therapies and neuroprotective approaches. The results of our research provide hope that it will be possible to improve the quality of life for people affected and help them in their recovery.

The outlook on 2013 is even better. A total of 144 grant applications from scientists and institutes all over the world have reached our office in the past two months. The largest number of applications we have ever received.

This progress is thanks to you! Only with your support can Wings for Life provide the much needed funds for our researchers. You’ve supported us is so many ways –with your donations, by joining us at our “Gipfeltreffen” charity dinner, by taking part in our Formula-1 project “Faces for Charity”. It’s incredible that every year more and more people organise their own events or fundraising projects in aid of Wings for Life, including universities and even school classes.

Looking to the year ahead, we already have lots of fundraising projects in the calendar. One highlight will be our first charity ball hosted by Susie Wolff and David Coulthard, run by our team in the United Kingdom. We have plenty of new initiatives up our sleeve… so watch this space.

We’re making great progress but there’s still a long way ahead of us before we reach our goal. We hope you will stay with us on our journey and work together with us 2013.

Thank you very much for your trust and your amazing support. We wish you and your families a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Yours sincerely,
Anita Gerhardter
